    Samuel Volery

The 34 year old slackliner from Zurich, Switzerland started Slacklining in 2004 to stabilize his knee after an injury of his crutiate ligament. Not only did he recover extremely fast from his injury, but he started loving that sport and soon after founded SLACKTIVITY together with Tobias Rodenkirch. In the following years he concentrated on Jumplining and became Swiss Champion in Tricklining in 2013. From that moment on he started to highline more and more as he discovered the freestyle potential of that sport, and started pushing the boundaries. He broke the world record of highlining several times - in 2018 he walked a 1900m long highline without falling. Beside that, he was the first person to manage the handstand on a highline and keeps impressing the slackline world with spectacular trick-combos. He walks all his highlines secured.

When I stepped on my first Slackline in the summer of 2006, it felt totally different to me then any other sport I had tried before. I will never forget that positive feeling after crossing my first Slackline after 3 days of practising. Slacklining quickly became more than just my hobby. 4. Tutorial: Highlinen

  5. Forces in Highlining

Many people who see a highliner on a highline for the first time, think that the forces are very high, especially when falling into the highline (leash fall). Since the slack ("sag") in highlining is not as limiting as in longlining over ground, most highlines are much less biased and this leads to lower forces than you would like.

Check out this video and write out of the tests we did:

  6. Oval-Carabiner vs. Pear-Shaped Carabiner

Because slacklining is still a young sport and there are still few materials and standards that are geared to the slackline application, material from other applications (from sports and industrial climbing to industrial applications) is used.
Here in this article it is shown that this is carabiners can be used in a few applications while slacklining. Be aware that you never use aluminum carabiners in your rig. They tend to break under cyclid load.

This video shows how the carabiner shape affects the breaking load of triangular loads.

  7. Overview Highline Tutorials

The biggest dream and fear of every slackliner - Highlining attracts more and more slackliners. It's an disciplince within slacklining. It's diverse, fascinating, complex, scary but a lot of fun at the same time! Your mind, or your family thinks you're crazy, and that it's a ridicilous dangerous sport. But think about it. You're attatched to a slackline, with a backup, a breaking strength as low as 2 tons or 20kN. You're in the middle of the air. What can you hit? There's nothing you can fall on. It's not like climbing where you're close to the rockwall.
Thereby comes that you don't have to be an absolute pro to highline! There've been new comers to the highline sport, that mastered it within one year (our athletes: Les Farfadets, Louise Lenoble). This wasn't possible for them if there was not an experienced highliner with them to rig the lines safely.
So remember: You don't have to be an slackline expert to start highlining, learn the basics; (chongo-)mount, mantle mount and leashclimb and you're ready to go. You just have to have a few expert friends who can take you out highlining!

  11. Forces in slacklining (Ratchet lines)

The forces that occur during slacklining are composed of the preload force and the weight of the slackliner. This can be both static and dynamic. It is not possible to determine the forces without measuring device exactly - but one can calculate the forces in static slacklining with a formula approximately.

Here are some basic rules of the forces:

  19. Highline World Record 169 meter!

10 days after our monster-highline in the Churfirsten (537m long) has been taken down by lightning we still had the open project to make a rope-jump into a highline. Specially for that purpose Marvin has bought a long rope. So we decided to rig another highline near by the world famous devil's bridge in Andermatt (Switzerland), protected between electricity cables, so that lightning was no threat anymore and that the line was not blocking any helicopter pathway.

  20. Longline World Record

A slackline world record on marathon

Some months ago we started developing a new line. The goal was to have a line with:

    - soft & rounded edges, so it feels nice under the feet
    - rather low stretch, so it's easy to rig on big distances
    - 3-layer-construction to have the outer fibres under less tension than the inner ones.

New longline world record on polyester! And the proof that 1% of a marathon can be walked on Marathon-webbing!
