Blog & Know-How
Many people who see a highliner on a highline for the first time, think that the forces are very high, especially when falling into the highline (leash fall). Since the slack ("sag") in highlining is not as limiting as in longlining over ground, most highlines are much less biased and this leads to lower forces than you would like.
Check out this video and write out of the tests we did:
Work in Progress!
Because slacklining is still a young sport and there are still few materials and standards that are geared to the slackline application, material from other applications (from sports and industrial climbing to industrial applications) is used.
Here in this article it is shown that this is carabiners can be used in a few applications while slacklining. Be aware that you never use aluminum carabiners in your rig. They tend to break under cyclid load.
This video shows how the carabiner shape affects the breaking load of triangular loads.
The biggest dream and fear of every slackliner - Highlining attracts more and more slackliners. It's an disciplince within slacklining. It's diverse, fascinating, complex, scary but a lot of fun at the same time! Your mind, or your family thinks you're crazy, and that it's a ridicilous dangerous sport. But think about it. You're attatched to a slackline, with a backup, a breaking strength as low as 2 tons or 20kN. You're in the middle of the air. What can you hit? There's nothing you can fall on. It's not like climbing where you're close to the rockwall.
Thereby comes that you don't have to be an absolute pro to highline! There've been new comers to the highline sport, that mastered it within one year (our athletes: Les Farfadets, Louise Lenoble). This wasn't possible for them if there was not an experienced highliner with them to rig the lines safely.
So remember: You don't have to be an slackline expert to start highlining, learn the basics; (chongo-)mount, mantle mount and leashclimb and you're ready to go. You just have to have a few expert friends who can take you out highlining!
Karin Doblander from Tirol almost succeeded in improving the women's highline world record at 580m & Samuel Volery from Switzerland made the 580m as the first slackliner blindfolded.
The next level - Longlinen is probably the most varied and most exciting (maybe expect highlining) discipline of slacklining. Whether beginner or pro - here you will find tutorials to expand your longline experience. Have fun on the narrow band! Feedback on the videos or ideas for new tutorials are always welcome.
On this page you'll find an overview of all the trickline tutorials out there made by Samual Volery!
The forces that occur during slacklining are composed of the preload force and the weight of the slackliner. This can be both static and dynamic. It is not possible to determine the forces without measuring device exactly - but one can calculate the forces in static slacklining with a formula approximately.
Here are some basic rules of the forces:

In late September, an international team of adventurers met above the Todra Valley in Morocco to harness spectacular highlines in various lengths and heights, including the longest highline ever rigged, at this unique canyon. The previous highline world record was held by Nathan Paulin (F) and Danny Mensik (CZ), who ran in the south of France a line of 1020m.
In this video the Dreamwalkers, Tom Peek, Yuri Rhodenborgh and Jonas Konijnenberg are documented on a trip by filmcrew Venture Collective. They went to the French alps together with a sick camera; The RED EPIC X.3
Sam broke his record on the mountain Moléson, during a meeting of the very best highliners of the world. "We are here mainly to have some fun!" Sam continues: "I wanted to make one last try in the evening. I heard someone else walking on the parallel highline and this gave me the confidence that I wasn't alone out there. I stopped thinking, just counting my steps. It was a meditive state of mind!
In september 2015, Samuel Volery organized the second edition of The Highline Extreme. This year, Europe's best highliners met up with the intention to try and break several highline world records. Keep on reading and experience the event through the eyes of Samuel Volery!
Check out this extreme clip from Samuel Volery, attempting a highline record (537m) in Switzerland, while he gets confronted by the wrath of the thunder god!
10 days after our monster-highline in the Churfirsten (537m long) has been taken down by lightning we still had the open project to make a rope-jump into a highline. Specially for that purpose Marvin has bought a long rope. So we decided to rig another highline near by the world famous devil's bridge in Andermatt (Switzerland), protected between electricity cables, so that lightning was no threat anymore and that the line was not blocking any helicopter pathway.
A slackline world record on marathon
Some months ago we started developing a new line. The goal was to have a line with:
- soft & rounded edges, so it feels nice under the feet
- rather low stretch, so it's easy to rig on big distances
- 3-layer-construction to have the outer fibres under less tension than the inner ones.
New longline world record on polyester! And the proof that 1% of a marathon can be walked on Marathon-webbing!
